Picture Book Dummies

A picture book dummy is a mock-up of the final printed version, showing the number of pages, size and illustrations. It is important for the publishers to know how a book will look although they may alter the layouts or size of the pages. Most picture books are 32 pages long with the odd numbers on the right-hand side.

The story starts at around page 5 to give room for endpapers and title page, known as front matter. Unless you are the illustrator as well as the author, it is not advisable to send a dummy as the editors choose the illustrator.
